The Film Guide - The Moz Mash-Up

The Moz Mash-Up

To kick things off on our First Anniversary (we got married twice, so there will be two of these each year…sigh) weekend, The Better Half and I went to see Morrissey at the Hollywood Bowl.

Now, I know a bit of the Moz, and have listened to him here and there, but The Better Half truly loves him, and boy was she not alone!

There was every conceivable kind of human being when I walked up to Bowl that cool Friday evening, and I had no idea that this gentle, slightly effete, very well dressed middle-aged man from Manchester could inspire such passion from the all these people outlined below.

All you have to do is multiple each column with each other to get a cross-section of the live audience at the Bowl that night…pretty mind-blowing huh?

As for the First Anniversary itself…well, I watched the French Open, ate Pizza, watched the NBA Finals, ate crêpes, lay on the sofa, and then watched all those hours of The Sopranos we had saved up on the DVR leading up to the grand finale. It was all topped off by some delicious butter pecan/macadamia nut/Heath toffee ice-cream with whipped cream.

I wonder why guys fret so much over their anniversaries?

The basu! Guide to the Movies
(The Corporate-Rebel-Without-a-Cause Edition)
08 June 2007

The b! List

Ten things that are the best, ever (currently)!

1. The Sopranos Series Finale. The perfect ending to what Stephen Holden called the "most important piece of pop-culture in the last 25 years." The debate over what really happened will rage on forever; what will not be debated, however, is that we have seen perhaps the only truly great piece of art that television will produce in our lifetimes. http://tinyurl.com/2xedvc

2. Rafael Nadal. I never thought I'd see the day that someone would beat the Greatest Athlete alive (Roger Federer) into abject surrender. This is exactly why Tennis is much more compelling than Golf. Plus, it was great just to see Gustavo "Guga" Kuerten again! http://tinyurl.com/2smuam

3. Rags to Riches Wins the Belmont Stakes. Talk about Girl Power…the foxy filly kept battling right until the bitter end to defeat Curlin and become the first filly to win a Triple Crown race in over a hundred years. You Go Girl! http://tinyurl.com/3cynjo

4. I'm Sorry, I Won't Do it Again.

5. I'm Sorry, I Won't Do it Again.

6. I'm Sorry, I Won't Do it Again.

7. I'm Sorry, I Won't Do it Again.

8. I'm Sorry, I Won't Do it Again.

9. I'm Sorry, I Won't Do it Again.

10. I'm Sorry, I Won't Do it Again.

One to Watch: Sure-Fire Best Actress Oscar Nominee

La Vie en Rose
Directed by: Olivier Dahan
Starring: Marion Cotillard, Gérard Depardieu, Emmanuelle Seigner, Sylvie Testud
Plot: A biopic of legendary French chanteuse Edith Piaf, whose personal life was every bit as dramatic as her songs. Truth-is-always-more-powerful-than-fiction type complications ensue.
The basu! Buzz: Back when The Better Half and I were walking around the streets of the Second Best City in the World (aka Paris) we kept seeing these posters for a movie called La Môme. As the Parisians walked by in their oh-so fashionable way (loved those jaunty scarves that the men wore), they would notice these posters and immediately start talking very animatedly about the movie (presumably – I do not speak a lick of French beyond what I learned from years of watching the French Open; stuff like S'il vous plait… Égalité…Avantage Mademoiselle Graf…Jeu Monsieur Bruguera…Quinze–Zéro…Jeu, Set, Match Monsieur Nadal). I'd never heard about the film, and was surprised to see so much excitement emanating from these Parisians with such discriminating taste (oops…I almost wrote "these discriminating Parisians" which would have a different connotation entirely…whew…close call!). Then, all of a sudden, it dawned on me…a lady in the 1940s, her back to the camera, singing in front of an adoring crowd…the drama…the passion…it could only be…that's right, that long-gestating Edith Piaf biopic. Of course, for American audiences, they had to re-title it after her most famous song (the one that my parents played all…the…time), but it's almost certain that you can pencil in Cotillard (who must be thanking her lucky stars for getting out of the dreadful A Good Year alive) for a nomination come 22 Jan 2008 (you heard it here first).
Bottom Line: Those Lucy Few in Manhattan and Los Angeles: Theatres – Eventually; Other, Less Fortunate Souls: DVD
Other Movies to Check Out (as well): The Conformist; 1984; One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest ; Cool Hand Luke; The Corporation

One to Watch: The Fourth of the Stampeding Three-quels

Ocean's Thirteen
Directed by: Steven Soderbergh
Starring: George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Andy Garcia, Al Pacino, Don Cheadle, Bernie Mac, Ellen Barkin, Casey Affleck, Scott Caan, Elliott Gould, and The Great Carl Reiner (whew!)
Plot: A conman gathers his gang for that obligatory "one last job" after one his friends is double-crossed. How-high-can-you-count? type complications ensue.
The basu! Buzz: People loved the first one ( Eleven), hated the second one (Twelve), and are ambivalent about the third (uh, Thirteen) . Now, be honest with me, would you really give up a chance to see a movie featuring the Man Crushes of the Summer (so memorably dubbed by the San Francisco Chronicle)? Nope, I didn't think so.
Bottom Line: Theatres – Eventually
Other Movies to Check Out (as well): The Conformist; 1984; One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest ; Cool Hand Luke; The Corporation

One Not to Watch: The Horror of Making a Sequel to a Classic Film

Belle Toujours
Directed by: Manoel de Oliveira
Starring: Michel Piccoli, Bulle Ogier
Plot: A sequel/homage to the classic film Belle du Jour. The-horror-the-horror! type complications ensue.
The basu! Buzz: It's good to see that the abhorrent practice of endlessly recycling old films is not just a uniquely American tradition…of course, the French/Portuguese do have the good taste to try to butcher a great film rather than a pedestrian, well-known one.
Bottom Line: NEVER!
Other Movies to Check Out (instead): The Conformist; 1984; One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest ; Cool Hand Luke; The Corporation

New Movies

Surf's Up
Directed by: Ash Brannon and Chris Buck
Starring: Shia LaBeouf, Zooey Deschanel, Jeff Bridges, Jon Heder, James Woods
Plot: The world's best surfer must stand up against the best to prove that he is the best…penguin?! I-thought-penguins-lived-in-the-cold-type complications ensue.
The basu! Buzz: Disturbia , Transformers, Indiana Jones IV and this movie…I've just about had enough of this LaBeouf guy. I mean, really, this is the son of Indiana Jones? Now, I know Steven Spielberg needs to pull in that Disney Channel demographic (Lord knows he can't anymore), but did he really have to sink this low? Add this to the fact that Sean Connery is not coming out of retirement to be Indy's dad just one more time, and you can see why I am so bl**dy upset!
Bottom Line: Those with Screaming Little Children in Desperate Need of Babysitting Help: Theatres – Eventually; Other, Much Luckier People: DVD
Other Movies to Check Out (as well): The Conformist; 1984; One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest ; Cool Hand Luke; The Corporation

Hostel: Part II
Directed by: Eli Roth
Starring: Lauren German, Roger Bart, Heather Matarazzo, Bijou Phillips
Plot: Three young American women are lured to a hostel where the checkout time is…never! Sorry-couldn't-resist-type complications ensue.
The basu! Buzz: How did I know that I'd finally become too old? Was it when I couldn't touch my toes anymore, even with my knees bent? No. Was it when I found myself out of breath walking up the stairs…to the first floor? No. Was it when I found myself in bed with a cup of tea, watching reruns of Murder She Wrote on a Saturday night? No. It was when even I could not bring myself to watch any more torture porn like this. The studio LionsGate should be proud, it is this close to beating Paramount for the title of Worst Studio, Ever .
Bottom Line: Pass!
Other Movies to Check Out (instead): The Conformist; 1984; One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest ; Cool Hand Luke; The Corporation

The Film Guide - The basu! Guide to Business Conferences

The basu! Guide to Business Conferences

It is an unavoidable fact of modern corporate life that at one time or another we have to attend one of those interminable, mind-numbing, soul-crushing Business Conferences.

Luckily for you I have become an old pro at this (emphasis on old), and I hereby bequeath to you my time-tested tactics for surviving one of these monstrosities.

1. Don't Meet New People
I know what they say, that you need to get out of your comfort zone and try to meet new people. Look, you're going to be too tired and stressed out without having this hanging over your head to boot. Just chill out with the people you normally hang out with. Your boss would want you to be comfortable and well rested when you get back to work.

2. Invent Your Own Title
Modern corporate titles are often fairly meaningless ("Business Relationships," "Search Lead," "Associate VP of Analytical Marketing," "Account Strategist," etc.) so you may as well make up your own. Chances are, you won't be important enough for the people you meet to remember you anyway (if you were, they'd meet you, not the other way around), so you may as well make it entertaining. Anything to do with "Web 2.0" is all the rage these days so you won't go wrong with titles like "Web 2.0 Initiatives" or "Web 2.0 Strategy" or "Web 2.0 Maximizer" and the like.

3. Use Buzz Words in a Sentence
Most conferences have that dreaded nugget of marketing wisdom called a theme, and you'll find that there will be a related group of buzz words that keep popping up again and again in all the speakers' lectures. Write these words down, and see how many you can get into a sentence when you speak to your boss and his/her senior-level friends. For example: "I was intrigued by all the low-hanging fruit which are available for integration into our Web 2.0 monetization platforms. We should consider our first-mover benefits as key incentives for early adopters to move into this paradigm-shifting fluid marketplace." Your boss's senior-level friends may or may not be impressed, but at least you've made things somewhat interesting for yourself.

4. Ask a Back-Patting/Sucking-Up Question
Remember, asking questions is a surefire way to indicate to people that (a) you have been paying attention, and (b) you're a shameless corporate climber who'll just about do anything to get noticed. If you are going to be shameless, then you may as well as make the question as flattering to the speaker as possible so that you can get some additional mileage out of it. For example: "I understand that your product leads to more sales with less cost. Do you think I can use it make even more money for my clients?"

5. Stand Next to "That" Guy/Girl
No one wants to be "that" guy or girl, but you and I both know that alcohol is the only way any of us make it through one of these things. Now, being that we want to keep our reputations somewhat intact, you should just use my strategy and stand next to the hapless colleague destined to become "that" guy/girl they will talk about until the next conference. That way no matter how many cosmo-tinis…sorry…single-malt scotches…I meant single-malt scotches you put away, no one will notice you because everyone will be fixated on "that" guy/girl standing/swaying/saying inappropriate things next to you. You, my friend, have a blank check to forget where you are for one glorious evening, and do whatever your little alcohol-fueled heart desires.

Now excuse me, I heard they're closing the bar, and the next presentation starts in fifteen minutes…

The basu! Guide to the Movies
(The I-Heart-Corporate-America Edition)
01 June 2007

The b! List

Ten things that are the best, ever (currently)!

1. LeBron James. Just when we were this close to being relegated to another stultifying San AntonioDetroit NBA Finals, King James single-handedly lifted his team to a most improbable victory. Just consider that he would be graduating from college right about now, and you get a sense of how monumental this is. Yes, we are all witnesses…Amen! http://tinyurl.com/2c2qmz

2. The French Open. Looks like we're headed for another epic NadalFederer Final. Sprinkle in the rise of the Serbians (Jelena Jankovic,  Ana Ivanovic and Novak Djokovic), the relegation of Maria Sharapova to her rightful place as the resident villain, and you have another fine example of why Tennis is simply one of the greatest sports, ever! http://tinyurl.com/27owrm

3. Los Gatos, CA. A wonderful little community nestled somewhere between Santa Cruz and Mountain View in wondrous Northern California. You should check it out, though you may not have the lovely Oliver Deighton-Basu and Kristen Parsi hosting you as I did. http://tinyurl.com/2apgdg

4. Creature Comforts [CBS, Monday, 8/7c]. Yay, the genius that is Nick Park and Aardman Animations is actually going to be showcased on American network television. Will wonders never seize? http://tinyurl.com/ywmsal

5. Peter O'Toole as the Pope. Dude, The Great Thespian himself is going to be the Pope (albeit just Pope Paul III) on the next season of The Tudors. As if Jonathan Rhys Meyers was not going to be reason enough for me to finally subscribe to Showtime! http://tinyurl.com/2fg6sv

6. "Umbrella" by Rihanna featuring Jay-Z. Uh-oh, uh-oh, uh-oh, oh, oh, oh…as the song goes Beyoncé, you'd better watch your back! http://tinyurl.com/2tqhc6

7. The Dangerous Book For Boys by Conn Iggulden and Hal Iggulden . Finally, boys can be boys again…Yikes! I hope I have girls (if and) when I have children.  http://tinyurl.com/2f9fbu

8. Letters from Iwo Jima on DVD. The movie that all of us meant to see before the Oscars, but never got around to it. http://tinyurl.com/2zap8j

9. K.J. Choi. Just goes to show that the South Korean invasion is not limited to the LPGA. http://tinyurl.com/ysx6a5

10. Julia Scheeres. The wonderful author of the "very good, but very sad" (in the words of the bookseller at DIESEL Books in Rockridge, Oakland, CA…yes, I said Oakland) just happened to be at our friend Amy Sullivan's barbecue. Of course, since that was the closest I was ever going to get to a celebrity I rushed out to two different bookstores before finding a copy of her novel to have her autograph. Her being freaked out by my actions, however, was a bit unexpected. Maybe I should have read the dust-jacket before telling her that I was sure it would be a "fun read." http://www.juliascheeres.com/

One to Watch: Another in a Long Line of Great Documentaries

Crazy Love
Directed by:  Dan Klores and Fisher Stevens
Starring:  Burt Pugach, Linda Pugach
Plot: A woman ends up marrying the man who blinded her. They-don't-call-it-Crazy-Love-for-nothing type complications ensue.
The basu! Buzz: Okay, so one day, out of the blue, I get an email from someone called Noelle Cleary. Apparently, I don't know Ms. Cleary, and she doesn't know me, but we do have someone in common – her "betrothed" and my colleague (I use the term loosely, he's a director and I, clearly, am not) the legendary John Burke . Now, Ms. Cleary had been getting my little emails through John and she felt compelled to write to me about a crazy, haunting little documentary she had seen that she wanted me to watch immediately. That documentary, you guessed it, was the very same Crazy Love that I am writing about here. As my friend Doney Joseph once said, documentaries touch you in a way that fiction films cannot. Add this little nugget to my joy of discovering that there are some people out there who actually take the time to read my Guide, and I will be rushing out to watch this movie if and when it finally comes down to Hermosa Beach.
Bottom Line: Those Lucky Few in Manhattan and Los Angeles: Theatres – First Week; Other, Less Fortunate Souls: DVD
Other Movies to Check Out (as well): In the Company of Men; Office Space; Wall Street ; Working Girl; The Secret of My Succe$s

One to Watch: The Great Judd Apatow

Knocked Up
Directed by: Judd Apatow
Starring:  Seth Rogen, Katherine Heigl, Paul Rudd
Plot: A beautiful and successful woman must learn to live with the consequences of a one-night stand with someone who is, um, not. Ah-the-joys-of-parenthood type complications ensue.
The basu! Buzz: Apatow is the Godfather of New Comedy. It's that plain and simple. He's either been instrumental in, or at least been a part of, careers as varied as those of Luke and Owen Wilson, Sacha Baron Cohen (aka Borat), Jack Black, Steve Carell, Jim Carrey, Paul Rudd, Will Ferrell, Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Steve Coogan, John C. Reilly (the comedy portion of his career), D  avid Koechner, Garry Shandling, and the entire writing team from Undeclared and Freaks and Geeks. Some of you are probably confused by Rogen's face staring at you from the many posters for this movie, but hey, even Carell was not as well known before he made The 40-Year-Old Virgin. The reviews have been ecstatic, the cast is appealing, and with a guy as seemingly nice, talented and loyal as Apatow behind the whole thing, don't you just want to run out and watch it? Don't you?
Bottom Line: Theatres – First Week
Other Movies to Check Out (as well): In the Company of Men; Office Space; Wall Street ; Working Girl; The Secret of My Succe$s

One to Watch: The Great Timothy Spall

Pierrepoint: The Last Hangman
Directed by: Adrian Shergold
Starring:  Timothy Spall, Juliet Stevenson, Eddie Marsan
Plot: The most notorious hangman in British history tries to keep his career a secret from his wife. At-least-he-doesn't-bring-his-work-home type complications ensue.
The basu! Buzz: I love Spall, just absolutely love the guy, and have ever since I saw him in Mike Leigh's Secrets & Lies. While the leading ladies Brenda Blethyn and Marianne Jean-Baptiste got all the attention (and justifiably so) Spall was never given his just due for his expert work in that little gem. Luckily for him, Hollywood agents at the very least took notice, and he's popped up in small roles all over the place. This starring role is apparently the closest he's come to matching that breakthrough, and I can't wait until this film hits my Netflix queue.
Bottom Line: DVD
Other Movies to Check Out (as well): In the Company of Men; Office Space; Wall Street ; Working Girl; The Secret of My Succe$s

New Movies

Mr. Brooks
Directed by: Bruce A. Evans
Starring:  Kevin Costner, Demi Moore, William Hurt, Dane Cook,  Marg Helgenberger
Plot: A seemingly normal man is driven to murder multiple times by his nefarious alter ego. It's-always-the-quiet-ones type complications ensue.
The basu! Buzz: Back when I was young a film starring Costner, Moore and Hurt would be quite an event. Unfortunately for the four of us, those days are long past. This, I think, has been a blessing in disguise for both Costner and Hurt. Having been stripped of their burden of box office viability, they have become much more eclectic in their choices, which has resulted in interesting, loose performances that we had not seen before (Costner in The Upside of Anger and Hurt in A History of Violence are prime examples). I mean, Costner plays a serial killer while Hurt is his conscience/alter ego! You have to agree that it sounds mad cool!
Bottom Line: DVD
Other Movies to Check Out (as well): In the Company of Men; Office Space; Wall Street ; Working Girl; The Secret of My Succe$s

Day Watch
Directed by: Timur Bekmambetov
Starring:  Konstantin Khabensky, Mariya Poroshina, Vladimir Menshov
Plot: An unwitting hero finds himself embroiled in the age-old struggle between the forces of…wait for it…Light and Darkness. Why-do-these-heroes-always-start-off-as-unwitting? type complications ensue.
The basu! Buzz: My colleague  "Bad" Andy Abdelmalek has been trying to convince me of the brilliance of this trilogy-in-the making (Night Watch, as one would expect, is the first part of the whole enterprise). Being that he is a reasonably reliable source I will be sure to watch this film…when it is eventually released as a consolidated box set with the other two films (the third of which will wash up on our shores sometime next year I expect).
Bottom Line: DVD
Other Movies to Check Out (as well): In the Company of Men; Office Space; Wall Street ; Working Girl; The Secret of My Succe$s

Gracie
Directed by: Davis Guggenheim
Starring:  Carly Schroeder, Elisabeth Shue, Andrew Shue, Dermot Mulroney
Plot: A young woman must battle her distant father as well as general sexism in the community when she tries out for the boys' football…sorry soccer…team. Stop-me-if-you've-heard-this-one-before type complications ensue.
The basu! Buzz: Bend It Like Beckham had Parminder Nagra and Keira Knightley going for it. This has the Shue siblings. I think I will take the first film.
Bottom Line: Those with Tweenage Girls in Need of Positive Role Models: Theatres – Eventually; Other, Much Luckier Souls: Pass
Other Movies to Check Out (as well): In the Company of Men; Office Space; Wall Street ; Working Girl; The Secret of My Succe$s

The Fifth Empire
Directed by: Manoel de Oliveira
Starring:  Ricardo Trepa, Luís Miguel Cintra, Glória de Matos
Plot: A long-lost Portuguese king from the Middle Ages mysteriously reappears and tries to reclaim his mantle. Those-Middle-Ages-were-always-trouble type complications ensue.
The basu! Buzz: Dude, the director is in his nineties! That's not a typo, he's in his late-nineties! C'mon, don't tell me you're not extremely impressed by him.
Bottom Line: Me, and Others Looking for Age-Appropriate Role Models: DVD; Other, Younger Souls: Pass
Other Movies to Check Out (instead): In the Company of Men; Office Space; Wall Street ; Working Girl; The Secret of My Succe$s

Rise: Blood Hunter
Directed by: Sebastian Gutierrez
Starring:  Lucy Liu, Michael Chiklis, Carla Gugino
Plot: A woman returns from the dead to find the people who, um, "killed" her. The-attack-of-the-TV-"stars" type complications ensue.
The basu! Buzz: Liu was great on Ally McBeal , Chiklis is great on The Shield and the wonderful Gugino was seemingly given another lease on her professional life after her recent sparkling guest turn on Entourage (after her previous critical hits Karen Sisco and Threshold  – the latter of which my friend Andy Colville wrote for – did not fare as well with the viewing audience).
Bottom Line: Me, and Others with Fond Memories of Ally McBeal, The Shield and Karen Sisco : DVD; Other, Much More Sensible People: Pass
Other Movies to Check Out (instead): In the Company of Men; Office Space; Wall Street ; Working Girl; The Secret of My Succe$s
